Company History/Our Staff
Tred Avon Yacht Sales Inc. is a family owned and operated company in the center of "downtown" Oxford. Please feel free to contact us if we can help you with any of your boating needs and to help you find the perfect yacht for you. We strive to give all of our customers personal attention and spend a great deal of time searching for the yacht that meets your needs and requests. We are not limited to location, and we are happy to travel with you to see yachts in other parts of the country if it helps you find the yacht you are looking for. While we are located on the picturesque Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Oxford, Maryland, we recognize there are many wonderful places where the yacht of your dreams might be berthed, and it is our goal to help you find it! Tred Avon Yacht Sales Inc. is a member of Y.B.B.A., and adheres to the highest standards of excellence in yacht sales.
Barry Starke started Tred Avon Yacht Sales Inc. in the spring of 1993. Having enjoyed boating for many years on the New Jersey shore as a young man, as well as sailing on lakes in Pennsylvania, he began Tred Avon Yacht Sales Inc. after returning from an extended nine month cruise with his wife and son through the Bahamas aboard his Sabre 38 "Liberator." Initially he was involved only with yacht brokerage, but several yacht owners approached him and encouraged him to start a charter company to complement the yacht brokerage business and so Choptank Charters was born in the spring of 1994.
Mimi Starke, Barry’s wife, joined the company as the Charter Coordinator of Choptank Charters. The charter business grew over the years with the fleet reaching as many as fourteen yachts of various sizes and types, both power and sail. After hundreds and hundreds of charters over the twenty years, the charter business was concluded in the fall of 2014. Mimi continues with Tred Avon Yacht Sales Inc. as office manager and sales associate.
Brett Starke joined the family business fulltime after completing his college career at Eckerd College in 2004. Initially, his energy was used primarily for the charter operations as he had helped with them since a teenager. Brett then helped expand the business with his talents in both yacht brokerage and a new boat sales division, selling as dealers for both Com- Pac Yachts and Bluewater Sportfishing Boats. Recently, Brett has taken a new position with DiMillo Yacht Sales of Portland, Maine in their new location at Shady Oaks Marina, West River MD as sales broker for this location and as dealers for Sabre Yachts and Coastal Craft Yachts. Brett’s excellent knowledge and practical experience in the yachting industry since childhood made this step forward in his career a natural choice. Brett continues to drive the Oxford Bellevue Ferry part-time as a 100T USCG licensed captain and offers his services for instruction and yacht delivery whenever possible.
The Starkes are a yachting family who has shared their love of the sailing and boats with many people through the years. Whether participating in Friday night races in Oxford, or big boat PHRF races on the Chesapeake Bay or cruising their yacht to distant anchorages, their love of sailing and boats in general has permeated their entire lives together. They still enjoy a family sail aboard "Liberator" whenever possible. They have practical knowledge and experience in all capacities, both as sailors and yachtsmen, and they look forward to helping you begin your boating adventure or the listing of your yacht for sale.
Edward (Ted) Clucas of Miles Creek Marine LLC: a seasoned sailor with excellent boat knowledge helps in the commissioning and repairs of our brokerage yachts as well as maintaining multiple yachts in the area.
John Thoman, a licensed USCG captain and a longtime friend of Tred Avon Yacht Sales, Inc./Choptank Charters. Although no longer doing check outs for our charters, he is always available to be a vessel examiner for all USCG vessel safety checks of your yacht.
Steve Roth of Bay Marine Services also helps to keep many of our boats in top running condition. For the past few years, Steve has been working for himself, but has had many, many years as a marine diesel mechanic. In addition to mechanics, Steve is a magician with fiberglass and has recently built a custom center console boat for one of his local customers.
